Interislander - Cook Strait Ferries

Picton Vehicle Check in

Here's everything you need to know about checking in with your vehicle at Interislander's Picton terminal.

If you are taking a vehicle on the ferry, follow the signs to Lagoon Road and the Interislander vehicle check-in area. Check in closes 60 minutes before departure.

Driving to the Interislander Terminal

Vehicle Passengers
  1. Follow State Highway 1 into Picton.
  2. Turn left into Kent Street.
  3. Follow Kent Street which turns into Lagoon Road.
  4. The Interislander Vehicle Check In is on your right, just after the NPD Picton Fuelstop.

Heading from Passenger Terminal to Vehicle Check In
  1. Head south down Auckland Street, away from the Passenger Terminal.
  2. Turn right into Dublin Street.
  3. Turn right into Lagoon Road
  4. The Interislander Vehicle Check In is on your right, just after the NPD Picton Fuelstop.

Driving directions from Picton passenger terminal to vehicle check in

Checking in

  • Arrive at least 60 minutes before scheduled ferry departure.
  • Follow the pink signs and road markings to vehicle check in.
  • Have your booking voucher and photo ID ready.
  • Collect your boarding passes at the check-in booth and follow instructions to boarding lane and park.
  • Once you have checked in, you must remain with your vehicle but are welcome to use the facilities provided in the yard.
If you need to visit the passenger terminal before vehicle check in
  • There is limited short-term parking outside the terminal. 
  • New bookings and payment for existing bookings can only be completed at the passenger terminal.
  • If any member of your party wishes to board as a walk-on passenger, you must check in at the passenger terminal. The driver can then drive to the vehicle check in.

Boarding

  • The marshal will advise when its time to drive on board the ferry.
  • Do not use mobile phones during boarding.
  • Once on board, follow the marshal's directions to park.
  • As soon as you are inside the ship, turn off your headlights as they may dazzle the marshal's eyes.
  • Once parked, ensure your handbrake is fully engaged and your car is in 'Park' or in gear.
  • If you are travelling in a campervan, turn off LPG cylinders.
  • Turn off alarm and anti-tow alarm (if present).
  • Lock your vehicle and to ensure all items are secure from damage or theft.
  • Follow the signs to the lifts and make your way to the passenger area.
  • Enjoy your sailing.

Getting to the ferry early does not mean you will be loaded first.

Each sailing is loaded differently depending on factors such as how many large vehicles we are carrying to ensure the load is balanced.
